The United Kingdom Before Thatcher

The United Kingdom was in the shadows of World War II, using money from The Marshall Plan to rebuild. The UK began to regrow during the 1950s & 1960s but the 1973 Oil Crisis and 1973 recession hurt the economy, leading to a political change to The Labour Party. But the poor economy continued, by the winter of 1978 there was massive public strikes due to the Labour Party instituting pay caps. The inability of the Labour Party to control the public led the Conservatives, headed by Thatcher, to take over.

“Unless we change our ways and our direction, our greatness as a nation will soon be a footnote in the history books, a distant memory of an offshore island, lost in the mists of time like Camelot, remembered kindly for its noble past”
- Margaret Thatcher, 1979
