Margaret Thatcher (née Roberts) was born on October 25, 1925 in the small market town of Grantham, in Eastern England. She was born to Alfred and Beatrice Roberts, and had an older sister named Muriel.

Her family were strong Methodists which greatly influenced her social life and political convictions. Traditions of self-help, charitable work and personal truthfulness were a large part of her community.

Margaret Thatcher's interest in politics was influenced by her father. Her father was greatly involved in the politics of Grantham beginning in 1927 as a council-member and eventually serving as mayor from 1945-1946.
